A Farming Shed serves a New Purpose
Post-war conditions made building permits very difficult to obtain as building materials were in short supply, and in fact only materials for new houses were available. So in May 1949 an old farming shed was purchased for 125 pounds, and transported from the country in pieces. En route a strong wind caught it and demolished some of the parts (once devoted to the clipping of wool) but most of it was salvaged and with the expertise of the architect - Mr. L. Warner - the Rev. J.E. Newnham and Mr. E.A. Gray of Lilydale Baptist, and Mr. J.F. Pryn of Kilsyth, the church building was complete. Mr. R. Washfold donated his time to paint the building. During the four years it took to purchase and complete the building the church continued to meet in the public hall, led by Revs. Hubert Smith (“a poor preacher but wonderful discusser of spiritual matters…we had better input after the services than during them!” remembers Mr. Jordan) and an interim at Lilydale, Rev. Doug Turley, remembered for his inspiring preaching. In 1951 Mrs. Jordan commenced a Baptist Sunday School at her home in Hull Road.
